▶️On Wednesday, April 16, University of Essex, England, has reported that researchers have captured the footage of colossal squid, a member of the glass squid family (Cranchiidae), in its natural habitat, the deep sea, for the first time ever. The sighting of the 30-centimetre juvenile squid took place on March 9 near the uninhabited South Sandwich Islands, part of a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean. Researchers obtained the footage at a depth of 600 metres. The date was the 100-year anniversary of the identification and formal naming of the colossal squid. The remotely operated vehicle called "SuBastian" that captured the photographs and video was launched from the Schmidt Ocean Institutes research vehicle Falkor (too). It was part of a 35-day Ocean Census flagship expedition searching for new marine life. The expedition is a collaboration between Schmidt Ocean Institute, the Nippon Foundation-Nekton Ocean Census, and GoSouth, a joint project between the University of Plymouth (UK), GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research (Germany), and the British Antarctic Survey, with international team of scientists led by Dr Michelle Taylor from University of Essex. He said "Its incredible that we can leverage the power of the taxonomic community through R/V Falkor (too) telepresence while we are out at sea". Deep-sea biologist Kat Bolstad, from Auckland University of Technology, helped identify the species in the recordings. "We're finally seeing confirmed footage of this animal that some of us have been studying and dreaming about for decades, " she said. "We get to introduce the live colossal squid to the world as this beautiful little delicate animal that highlights the magnificence of a lot of deep-sea creatures without some of that 'monster' hype. "
