A large-scale manhunt search took place in Sullivan's Island, South Carolina after a driver struck two children and an adult outside Sunrise Presbyterian Church shortly before 1 p. m. on May 1,2025. After hours searching, authorities found the suspect, Justin Collin Adams, on a boat in a local beach town and then took him into custody. Authorities accused him of hitting the victims in the church parking lot before escaping on foot, reportedly carrying a knife. Multiple law enforcement agencies-including the FBI, U. S. Marshals, and local police-joined forces in an intensive manhunt. Their efforts involved grid searches, going door-to-door, deploying drones and helicopters, and setting up checkpoints at the islands main access points. Residents were urged to stay indoors while the search was underway. Authorities eventually found Adams, described as a heavyset, middle-aged white man with a bald head and beard, wearing a red shirt and shorts, and took him into custody on a boat later that day. Authorities made the arrest peacefully and later confirmed that the area was safe. The adult victim and one child were admitted to the hospital and were in stable condition, while the other child received treatment at the scene and was released to their family. Investigators were still working to determine whether the collision was deliberate, although early reports indicated it may have been a deliberate act.

On Monday, April 28, at 12: 33 p. m. local time, Spains power grid lost 15GW, the equivalent of 60 of its national demand, within five seconds. As this was too much of a strain for the European power grid, it tripped the grid interconnection between Spain and France. As a result, Spain, Portugal and the French Basque Country disconnected from the rest of the European power grid. The cause of power loss remained unknown. System operations chief of Spanish grid operator REE, Eduardo Prieto, said in a news conference that "As the result of this disconnection and the serious imbalance of band generation that is in our electrical system, the electrical system collapsed". Because of the outage, a state of emergency has been declared. Hospitals switched to back-up power generators, traffic lights stopped working so the police were conducting traffic manually at major intersections, trains stopped as the power was lost, between 200 and 500 flights were cancelled as airports had to switch to emergency generators, and over 50 million people were directed to go home, with long queues at bus stops, and no metro or trains in operation. According to the head of the regional government, emergency services workers carried out 286 rescue operations to free people trapped inside elevators in Madrid alone. A young girl, Marina Sierra, speaks of difficulty getting home after her school was shut. "The building we were in was giving off smoke, they had to evacuate us quickly, " she said. "I'm shocked because everything is totally out of control. "Joanly Perez, a 33-year-old doctor in Madrid, said "I left work and the power suddenly went and people started buying. . . People aren't sure what might happen and are buying basic essentials, just in case. " With card payments systems not working, the shops that remained open switched to cash payments; many stores closed altogether due to lack of electricity. French network operator RTE restored power to the French Basque Country within a few hours of the outage and helped recover Spain's electricity supply. Spain had recovered more than 92 of its power by 5 a. m. on Tuesday, according to Spanish power distributor Red Elctrica, and Spains Prime Minister Pedro Snchez vowed that everyone in Spain would have lights back on before Wednesday. Madrid's minister for housing, transport and infrastructure Jorge Rodrigo Dominguez announced that most of the metro, except for line 7A, was back in service by 8am Tuesday morning. "This has been achieved thanks to the work of the underground professionals, who have made every effort to restore vital infrastructure for the people of Madrid as quickly as possible, " he said "My sincere thanks for rising to the occasion, once again, in an exceptional and unprecedented situation. "Portugal's acting prime minister, Louis Montenegro, said that Portugal has asked the European Union Energy Regulators' Cooperation Agency for audit "We want a thorough investigation into the causes of the blackout. We need quick and urgent answers".

Ukraine and the United States reached a deal on April 30 to give the US preferential access to new Ukrainian rare earth mineral deals and to create a new fund to attract investors and help in rebuilding war-torn Ukraine. It was signed in Washington by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for the US and First Vice Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko for Ukraine. US President Donald Trump proposed the agreement, publicly stating that he expects something in return for military aid to Ukraine. It would give the US priority in new Ukrainian investments to mine 55 minerals these include lithium, titanium, lanthanum, uranium, and cerium, among other rare earth and precious minerals. The accord did not include debt obligations for Ukraine, previously proposed, but rejected by Ukraine and Kyiv would still decide what to mine and where. It also does not provide the US access to operations the Ukrainian side already profits from. The Ukrainian side would be expected to deposit 50 of its future profits from government-owned resources listed above, while the US would help via monetary and military aid. No profits would be taken from the Fund for ten years. The current version, establishing the so-called United StatesUkraine Reinvestment Fund, was reached after intense negotiations; a previous iteration later derided by the Ukrainian side was almost signed before a now-famous altercation between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, devolved into Zelenskyy being told to leave the White House. The signing was praised publicly by both sides it "clearly signals the Trump Administration's commitment to a free, sovereign, prosperous Ukraine" the White House said. "Importantly, the Agreement sends a signal to global partners that long-term cooperation with Ukraine over decades is not only possible but reliable", Svyrydenko posted on the social media platform X. Svyrydenko also hoped for the deal to bring with it new support for Ukraine, though the American side did not directly respond to that. Former president and prime minister under Putin, now the deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia, stated: "Trump has broken the Kyiv regime into paying for American aid with minerals. Now they will have to pay for military supplies with the national wealth of a disappearing country. "

Saturday, May 3,2025On Monday, "Grey, Orange on Maroon, No. 8," an abstract painting created by late abstract painter Mark Rothko was scratched by a child while on display in a Dutch museum during what was described as an "unguarded moment. " The 1960 painting, which was characterized as "a meditative and striking color landscape, " was said to be worth tens of millions of dollars. A museum spokesperson told People Magazine that was dealt what was described as "superficial damage" after being touched by the child. According to the spokesperson, said the child's actions resulted in visible "small scratches" on then the unvarnished paint layer in the its lower section. A spokesperson for the museum told BBC, "Conservation expertise has been sought in the Netherlands and abroad. We are currently researching the next steps for the treatment of the painting. We expect that the work will be able to be shown again in the future. "Sophie McAloone, who serves as conservation manager at the Fine Art Restoration Company, was quoted saying that pieces similar to No. 8 are "particularly susceptible to damage. . . owing to a combination of their complex modern materials, lack of a traditional coating layer, and intensity of flat colour fields, which make even the smallest areas of damage instantly perceptible. In this case, scratching of the upper paint layers can have a significant impact on the viewing experience of the piece. "Jonny Helm, a marketing manager, stated that Rothko's amalgamations of pigments, resins, glues were "quite complex. " According to him, "Rothko works seem to have terrible luck this isn't the first damaged Rothko we've heard about. " "Black on Maroon, " another of Rothko's works, was damaged by a vandal named Wlodzimierz Umaniec in a London gallery in 2012. The museum did not identify the child, and did specify who would be financially responsible for the painting's restoration, or the potential costs. The museum also declined to share photos of the damage.

On Wednesday, a Turkish court sentenced Swedish journalist Joakim Medin to 11 months in prison for allegedly "insulting the President Recep Tayyip Erdoan". He also faces a second more severe charge of affiliation to a terrorist organisation. He appeared at a hearing before the court via videoconference from his prison cell, on April 30. Prosecutors claimed that Medin was present at a 2023 rally in Stockholm where an effigy of Erdoan was hung up by protesters, which he denied. Medin, who writes for the newspaper Dagens ETC, was detained on March 27 upon arriving at Istanbul Airport to cover the protests in support of the city's mayor Ekrem mamolu, who had been arrested the previous week on disputed corruption charges. In a letter written on April 12 from Marmara Prison, Medin said: "I have done nothing but journalism. Its not something that I should be in prison, not in Turkey or in any country. " The Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenergard, stated that the country was working for bringing Medin home once again. Both charges are often levelled against journalists who criticise the Turkish government. Press freedom in the country has experienced a sharp deterioration in recent years, with 57 journalists having been detained in 2024,10 of whom were imprisoned, according to a report of the Stockholm Center for Freedom. International organisation Reporters Without Borders condemned the sentencing, deeming it "undemocratic", and called for Medin's release and the dropping of both charges against him.

The 10-day anniversary 125th New York International Auto Show, the oldest American auto show and the largest event of its kind in the United States, took place on April 18,2025. The exhibition featured the latest models of sedans, trucks, SUVs and vans that are already available at dealerships, as well as a number of notable concept cars. New developments were demonstrated by 34 companies: Acura, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Bentley, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Fiat, Ford, Genesis, GTO Engineering, Honda, Hyundai, INEOS, Kia, Koenigsegg, Lamborghini, Lincoln, Lotus, Lucid, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Sacrilege Motors, Subaru, Porsche, RAM, Rimac, Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo. In addition to new models, the show also featured vintage historical cars. At the entrance, visitors were greeted by a 1910 Ford Model T, a yellow 1933 Pierce Silver Arrow sports coupe (only three examples remain), a 1947 Mercury Eight convertible, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing" coupe, a 1958 Buick Limited convertible, the iconic 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 (starring in the film "Back to the Future"), and a 2006 Bugatti Veyron 16.4. There were also special exhibits, such as New York Police Department (NYPD) vehicles from the past decades. The Golden Era exhibit showcased automotive highlights from the 1950s, including a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado, a 1958 Buick Limited, and a 1955 Packard Caribbean. The lower level featured a special display of off-road vehicles and RVs called the R2X Rides & Rigs Expo, as well as unique modified aftermarket vehicles. Many of the cars could be seen from the inside, while sitting in the showroom. Visitors could try driving and racing simulators, ride with a professional driver in a Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 5 N, Ioniq 6 or Kona Electric, making sharp turns at high speed, drive up a 28-foot Jeep mountain, and climb and slide down steep hills in a Ford Bronco SUV. The American auto industry has only introduced one innovative Jeep Wagoneer Overland Special Edition (2025 model) this year. But Korean, Japanese and German manufacturers have shown several notable updates. The Korean conglomerate Kia-Hyundai has been particularly prolific, owning more than half of the new products. The Korean Genesis car, created by the Hyundai plant in 2008, became an independent luxury brand in 2015, and now competes very successfully with new cars from BMW and Mercedes. The following seven 2026 models saw their world debut at the exhibition: Kia EV9 Nightfall Edition, Subaru Outback, Subaru Solterra, Subaru Trailseeker, Toyota GR86 Yuzu Special Edition, Toyota GR Supra MkV Final Edition and Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line Turbo. Three 2026 models were presented for the first time in North America: Hyundai Palisade, Kia EV4, Kia K4 Hatchback. The Genesis X Gran Equator concept was presented for the first time. Oleg Yunakov has chosen five notable new automobiles:Chevrolet 8 Corvette ZR1The eighth-generation Corvette combines elegance and speed with a glossy black exterior framed by racing stripes. The car is equipped with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 1,064 horsepower. In terms of performance, the production model is close to hypercars. Kia PV5 WKNDR EV VAN ConceptKia may not be the first name that comes to mind for American car enthusiasts, but the Korean manufacturer surprised with one of the most striking concepts presented at the show. The car looks provocative and gives the feeling that you can safely drive it to a campsite during a zombie apocalypse. The solar panel on top will help charge the batteries a little even without a charging station. The interesting shape of the body combined with an interesting tire solution makes the car memorable. But even more remarkable is the structure of the interior, which allows, despite the external ostentatious roughness of the facade, to create coziness. Fiat TopolinoThis unique car attracted the largest number of visitors to the exhibition. "Topolino" in Italian means "little mouse" and proves that small Fiat cars can be even smaller. Despite its dwarf size and the ability to park the car in the tightest space, the interior turned out to be surprisingly spacious against the background of the overall dimensions of the electric quad bike. The seats are plastic with several soft cushions. Such cars may be familiar to Europe, but for America and Canada this is a great rarity, since the model is not sold in the USA. By a unique coincidence, the author of these lines Oleg Yunakov saw a Fiat 500 Abarth/Fiat 500 Abarth on the street for the first time before visiting the exhibition, which he photographed, and this "Fiat Topolino" model is inspired by the solutions of the Fiat 500 "Topolino" of the 1930s. The priority for the car was efficiency, not speed. Genesis GMR-001 ConceptThe Genesis GMR-001 is a sports prototype conceived and developed by Genesis in collaboration with Oreca, and with advice from former FIA WEC Champion Andr Lotterer and IMSA Champion Pipo Derani. The model will feature a twin-turbocharged V8 hybrid engine. Two weeks before the US show, a half-scale model of the Genesis GMR-001 hypercar was shown at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show in Korea (April 313,2025). The full-scale prototype was unveiled at the US show, and will be exhibited in Dubai in December 2024. The Genesis GMR-001 will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship in the Hypercar category in 2026, and in the IMSA SportsCar Championship in the GTP category in 2027. Genesis X Gran Equator ConceptThe Genesis X Gran Equator concept car is the most interesting exhibit at the show. It is Genesis attempt to carve out a niche in the luxury SUV market that is geared toward overlanding. It combines exterior futurism with an interior retro feel. The sleek, futuristic SUV has a long hood, a two-tone interior, and Genesis signature dual-row headlights that are integrated into the body rather than glued on like many other cars. It is a strong competitor to the Range Rover Defender and other luxury SUVs. The name is not inspired by the Earths equator, but by the best Arabian stallion. The company alludes to the horses endurance and elegance, which may be hinted at by the muscular bulge of the fenders. There is no grille, which may imply that the car is planned to be electric. The overly long front end may indicate a hybrid, which is also hinted at by the two charging ports on either side. The front of the car looks a bit boring, and the lower round headlights do not quite match the square headlights placed inside the circle, and under the horizontal strip headlights higher. Instead of one window on the roof, there are four separate individual hatches. In the four-seater cabin, in place of the touch screen, there are round digital indicators made to look like old analog ones - three by the steering wheel and four more on the dashboard between the driver and passenger. There are two boxes on the right, and the gear shifter has the shape of a signature crystal ball. The interior is implemented in a pastel blue and beige color scheme, includes an original seat design with a backrest made of two separate parts, there are headrests and wide armrests between the seats with space for two bottles. The elegant retro-futuristic image of the SUV is completed by enlarged 24-inch wheels with high-cross-country tires. The tires are unbranded, meaning Genesis hasn't yet determined what tires will be used if the concept goes into production. The prototype stands out from the crowd so effectively that it was worth visiting the show. And here is a number of other cars from the exhibition:
