Saturday, April 26,2025On Saturday, a female lion killed a 14-year-old girl at a ranch located south of Nairobi National Park in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The attack occurred inside of the girl's own home. Another teenager who was present inside the residence at that time reported seeing the lioness snatch the girl before alerting others. Authorities stated that there was no evidence that the attack was the result of provocation of any sort by the victim or the witness. It was believed that the lioness was drawn to the residential area due to food scarcity, and gained access by scaling a "makeshift" fence. According to KWS, rangers and response teams were quickly mobilized and followed a trail of bloodstains that led to the Mbagathi River, where the girl's body was recovered. She had sustained injuries to her lower back. As of Friday, the lioness had not yet been located. Authorities set traps, and search teams conducted sweeps across the area in an effort to track down the lioness. Attacks on humans by lions are rare in Africa, especially when not related to livestock. KWS officials have stated that discussions were being held to "reinforce security measures" in an effort to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. In an unrelated incident a day prior, a 54-year-old man was killed by an elephant in Nyeri County, Kenya, the KWS said.

Saturday, April 26,2025On Friday, Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, plead not guilty to the charges of murder and stalking. He appeared in Lower Manhattan court on Friday, where he stated his plea to the judge. Mangione's not guilty plea came the same day federal prosecutors officially filed to seek capital punishment (also known as "death penalty") for Thompson's murder. The prosecution stated their belief that the purpose of the killing was "to amplify an ideological message. " US Attorney General Pam Bondi, who had initially pushed for Mangione's execution, stated her belief that the murder was politically motivated. Mangione's defense team had denounced the notion of executing him as "barbaric. "A group of Mangione's supporters assembled outside the courthouse, with some viewing him as a kind of "folk hero" amid widespread dissatisfaction with the U. S. healthcare system. Reports indicated that his legal defense fund has raised more than US1 million in donations.

Friday, April 25,2025On Wednesday, police said they had located the remains of a man who was killed by a shark on Olga Beach in northern Israel on Monday. The victim was identified as Barak Tzach, a 40-year-old father of four. The shark attack was the country's first fatal shark attack incident since Israel's founding in 1948, and its fourth in general; the first shark attack recorded near this coast was a fatal one in the 1940s. Tzach's remains were found in the same location where the attack occurred, after a search lasting two days; the beach had been closed by the authorities immediately after the attack. Beachgoers at Olga Beach, some of whom were on holiday, witnessing the incident filmed it and posted it to social media. "I was in the water, I saw blood and there were screams. . . . It's terrifying. We were here yesterday and saw the sharks circling us. "Endangered dusky and sandbar sharks have reportedly been frequenting the location for decades, especially in winter --- possibly due to the warm water released near Hadera by Orot Rabin, the largest power plant in Israel. Tzach's wife stated her belief that his intentions were to film and document the sharks, not to disturb them.

Friday, April 25,2025On Friday, a federal grand jury in Baltimore, United States indicted a Maryland man known as the Garri Master for allegedly conspiring to provide material support to armed separatist fighters in Cameroon, Africa, according to the US Department of Justice. Prosecutors said the man, named Tataw, called for violent attacks against civilians in Cameroon and aided in raising funds to support said operations. The indictment accused him of supporting a conspiracy involving murder, kidnapping, and maiming of civilians, highlighting the U. S. commitment to addressing international criminal activities that originate domestically. Federal prosecutors alleged that Tataw aided armed separatist groups fighting to carve out an independent state from Cameroons English-speaking regions. The indictment claimed he provided resources and made threatening communications with the intent to injure or kidnap Cameroonian civilians. Tataw was taken into custody and was expected to face trial in federal court. If convicted, he could face significant prison time for his alleged role in fueling violence overseas. The case highlighted the role of diaspora activists in the ongoing Anglophone crisis in Cameroon, where separatist groups have relied on overseas supporters for funding and operational support since the conflicts escalation in 2017. Tataws arrest followed broader efforts by U. S. and Cameroonian authorities to disrupt financial and logistical support flowing from the diaspora to armed groups in the region.

She won the presidential election in November 2024 as the candidate of the ruling South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO). SWAPO secured 53 of the parliamentary vote in the election, winning 51 out of 91 seats. The opposition party, Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), secured 20 seats. Nandi-Ndaitwah became the second woman to hold a presidential position in Africa. Dignitaries from across the continent were present at her inauguration, among them seven sitting African presidents and nine former heads of state. According to a BBC article, Namibia's unemployment rate rose to 36.9 in 2023. She emphasized the need for economic diversification to generate employment, noting it would "create jobs to take care of the unemployed, of which the majority are the youth. "In her inaugural address, she stated, "We are going to increase investments in the agriculture sector to boost output and meet domestic food requirements. "A veteran politician and long-time SWAPO member, Nandi-Ndaitwah joined the party at the age of 14 during Namibia's liberation movement and went into exile in 1973 to join the movement. SWAPO member Henning Melber voiced concern that the party had yet to fill the vice-presidency left vacant by Nandi-Ndaitwah during her presidential bid. MP Tobie Aupindi said the vacancy would remain until the party's next regular congress in 2027.
