NSW DCCEEW researchers discover critically endangered Leadbeater's possum in Kosciuszko National Park, Australia

Datum: 2025-06-03

Last week, the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) research team - more specifically, Martin Shultz and Fred Ford - have discovered seven photographs of the Leadbeater's possum near Yarrangobilly Caves, amidst the footage taken in October in Kosciuszko National Park, NSW, Australia, as they were going through nearly 1 million photos from trail cameras set up to conduct a survey of the smoky mouse. While both species are critically endangered in Australia, Leadbeater's possum was previously thought to be extinct in NSW, with the only known current populations being observed in Victoria, where the species is the mammal emblem of the state since 1971. The NSW Government has started the application for an expedited conservation listing of the Leadbeater's possum with the NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee. The finding has been confirmed by the Healesville Sanctuary and the Australian National University (ANU). Biodiversity Council member Professor David Lindenmayer from ANU has previously, 35 years ago, while pursuing a PhD, spent a few months around Yarrangobilly looking for the signs of presence of the Leadbeater's possum, due to the prediction of a climate model that the species may be found at that location, but "never saw one in the park". In his own words, "With so little high-quality habitat left in Australia, we should do our utmost to protect remaining areas; hopefully, there will be many more wonderful discoveries ahead, especially as detection techniques improve. " He further indicated that large parks like the "iconic" Kosciuszko National Park and the other major reserves in Australia should be provided for as necessary, as they are critical for biodiversity conservation. Dr Dan Harley, a Senior Ecologist at Healesville Sanctuary, noted that the NSW discovery, despite its unexpectedness, "in no way" changes the species' Critically Endangered status for the moment. Nevertheless, it has become a promising development for the future of the species that has been very close to extinction, as he noted past developments relating to the rediscovery of the species in 1961 and the discovery of its lowland and subalpine populations in 1986 and the 1990s respectively, which give rise to hope that the recent Black Summer bushfires might not have entirely destroyed the possibility of a remnant population of the species remaining in Victoria's northeast. Further, he said: "The discovery of the species further north in NSW was completely unexpected, and is a remarkable turn of events. Within Victoria there is strong genetic differentiation between highland and lowland Leadbeaters possums over a small distance. On this basis, and given the large distance between the Victorian populations in the Central Highlands and the NSW discovery site, it is highly probable that the NSW population is genetically distinct from populations in Victoria. Once the genetic results are in, I expect that we will have Northern Leadbeaters possums in NSW and Southern Leadbeaters possums in Victoria, each with distinctive management requirements. "Adult Leadbeater's possum, also known as fairy possum due to difficulty of observing one in the wild, is approximately 40cm long and 125g in weight. There are two varieties of them found in Victoria, as described above, and there are less than 40 lowland Leadbeater's possums left. Healesville Sanctuary has established a captive breeding program with another variety of the Leadbeater's possums, the highland ones, successfully raising Narvi, a female highland possum who has been released at the predator-free Coranderrk Bushland Nature together with a lowland possum, Mercury, with the goal of establishing a new colony. Healesville field officer Arabella Eyre stated that cross-population breeding would hopefully improve genetic diversity in the wild populations: "The lowland population is so small, there are fewer than 40 individuals left in the wild, " she said. "That's nine breeding pairs, and that can only hold on for so long. Without being able to bring in genetic diversity, we expect that they will be extinct within the next 15 years. " Which is why this first attempt for the sanctuary to match a mixed pairing is so important. Healesville Sanctuary's threatened species keeper Amie Hindson explained that there was immediate rapport between them from night one, expressing that "They're a really special love story for us. "

Australian Coalition reunite after one week

Datum: 2025-05-29

The Liberal-National Coalition of Australia, for decades the dominant centre-right party, has reunited after a separation that lasted a week. On the 28th of May, at a joint press conference, the two parties' leaders, Sussan Ley and David Littleproud, announced that the parties would be reuniting; with the Coalition being the Opposition, the two politicians also announced the new shadow cabinet at the same Wednesday's press conference. The two parties had previously split recently following the 2025 federal election, in which the both the Liberals and the Nationals were defeated by their rivals, leading to disagreements between the two parties over policy differences even as Peter Dutton, the leader of the Liberals and the Coalition, lost his seat in the Parliament, necessitating change of the leader of the Liberals. On the 20th of May, Nationals leader David Littleproud announced that the party was cutting ties with the Liberal party, insisting that the Nationals cannot give up their policy demands even as Sussan Ley, the new leader of the Liberals, was looking forward to a sweeping and thorough review of the party's policies in the wake of the significant loss in the federal election. At first, the split of the two parties caused doubts about whether either party would ever gain a majority enough to challenge the incumbent Labor government. At time of the reunion, the Liberals agreed to four policy demands issued by the Nationals, relating to nuclear power, a Regional Australia Future Fund, remote mobile data coverage, and changes to the supermarket sector. The split has reportedly caused infighting amongst the party, but Littleproud has stated that he would stand by the policies he demanded. The party has also undergone a shadow cabinet reshuffle following the reunification. It should be noted that in regards to nuclear power plants, the Coalition's policy has changed: it will no longer pursue their previous commitment to building seven of them, but will instead continue to push against the existing national moratorium on nuclear power. Back together, Liberal leader Sussan Ley has stated that she looked forward to the two parties working together in the future. There have been splits in the past, the most recent being in 1987, but neither parties could have formed majority government without the other.

Australian Nationals leave Coalition with Liberal Party

Datum: 2025-05-26

On Tuesday, May 20, the leader of the National Party, David Littleproud, announced that the party would be ending their century-long partnership with the Liberal Party. The two parties' coalition has been the dominant centre-right and right-wing party in Australian politics, opposing the centre-left Labor Party. But following the Coalition's historic defeat at the 2025 Federal Election, the Nationals have decided to leave the party, ending a decades long alliance. In his announcement, Littleproud cited growing differences in policy, including budgeting and nuclear power, and the party's poor performance at the recent 2025 election. The election itself was historic, with Liberal leader Peter Dutton losing his seat to a Labor MP (the first opposition leader to do so in the country's history) after leading the party to one of the most decisive election defeats in Australian history. Littleproud stated that the party "remains committed to having the door open" for re-establishing the agreement, but they have currently left the Liberals to go on what many have called a "journey of rediscovery". The split has cast doubts on the future of both parties, as their coalition has (for the most part) been the only way either party could establish a government. Election analyst Anthony Green has stated that the coalition would have to reform by the next federal election to effectively run for government. The two parties have looked at reforming the coalition, but until then Australia remains without a significant unified right-wing opposition in parliament.

Authorities arrest Belarusian Wikipedia sysop and only bureaucrat Maksim Lepushenka

Datum: 2025-05-26

On May 17,2025, Nasha Niva announced that Belarusian security forces had apprehended Maksim Lepushenka, the Belarusian-language Wikipedia sysop, on May 15,2025. This became the latest link in a chain of detentions of Belarusian Wikipedians in recent months. Lepushenka was a highly experienced figure in the Belarusian-language Wikipedia: he was a veteran editor, the sole bureaucrat, and had been a sysop since 2007. Despite his academic focus on the ancient history of Belarus, he devoted considerable time to maintaining order and resolving conflicts within the platform. Following the detention of the sole bureaucrat, the granting of sysop rights in Belarusian Wikipedia became technically impossible. In early May 2025, the Belarusian authorities detained Olga Sitnik (nickname - Khomelka), an editor and another sysop of the Belarusian Wikipedia. She was given 10 days of administrative arrest and placed in a detention center located in the 1st Okrestina Lane. Authorities had previously detained her on April 17th but later released her. The release date is unknown. Oleg Yunakov, an active contributor to Belarusian Wikipedia, shared his comments on the events. As can be seen from Okrestina article on Russian Wikipedia: "Okrestina" has become a household name, and the expression "to end up in Okrestina" means "to be detained" or simply "to end up in prison. " The term, named after the detention center, has become a symbol of the torture of peaceful citizens who disagreed with the election fraud and participants in the protests in Belarus (2020-2021). Minsk resident Olga Sitnik, who dedicates herself to raising her three minor children, is an active participant in the Belarusian Wikipedia. In her free time from family responsibilities, she enriches the section with knowledge in the fields of motherhood, culture, and nature. Her contributions were recognized by the community in 2010 when she became a sysop. These are far from the first and not the only two instances of repressive actions against members of the Belarusian wiki community. On March 13,2025, the editor with the nickname Kazimier Lachnovi (real name unknown) disappeared from the information space. In addition to creating articles, he was an sysop (one of four) and a bureaucrat (a user with the ability to grant sysop rights) of the "Tarashkevitsa" section. There are two language sections in Belarus one in Belarusian and the other in Tarashkevitsa. In addition to the disappearance of the sysop with the nickname Kazimier Lachnovi, at the end of 2024, a Wikipedia user with the nickname Stary Jolup, who works in the "Tarashkevitsa" section, was detained (though not formally for editing articles). Under Kazimier Lachnovi's activity, the section stated that the state language of Belarus is Belarusian, the flag is white-red-white, and the coat of arms is Pahonia. Lukashenka, who has controlled power for decades, was described as the "head of the occupation administration. "A week after the user with the nickname Kazimier Lachnovi disappeared, propagandist Lyudmila Hladkaya stated in her material that "Wikipedia is a weapon of mass destruction against post-Soviet countries, and the Belarusian section is edited from Poland. " The "Nasha Niva" publication suggests that the arrests of several sysops of the Belarusian-language Wikipedia in a short period appear to be interconnected, especially in conjunction with the start of attacks by propagandists, for which there are no obvious reasons. A commentator with the nickname Mkh noted under the "Nasha Niva" article:They brought order to the media, and now they've turned to Wikipedia. It seems they've just begun the second part of their plan:It's important to note that after 2022, in the Belarusian Wikipedia, the edit history of political articles, which allowed one to see who made the changes, became hidden at the oversight level. This means that the IP addresses and account names of editors are now inaccessible not only to readers and Wikipedia editors but even to the Belarusian section's sysops. The tactic of concealment was first tried in the Russian-language section, and then followed in the Belarusian one, where it was raised to the level of auditors. As Radio Liberty wrote on the symbolic date of May 9,2022, regarding the previous high-profile repressions against Belarusian Wikipedians: "Any of us could end up in the place of Pavel Pernikov and Mark Bernstein, " says Oleg Yunakov. "By default, everyone who edits an article remains in the edit history. And if someone previously mentioned their personal data on Wikipedia, then it's possible to link an edit to a person. We in the Arbitration Committee made an unprecedented decision a couple of months ago: to hide all authors of edits in articles on military topics. They remain authors, but they are not visible to outsiders. Therefore, it will be almost impossible to accuse someone now. The problem is that Mark and Pavel were taken before we implemented this. "As a reminder, Mark Bernstein was detained on March 11,2022, by Belarusian security forces from GUBOPiK, presumably due to his alleged work on the article about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He was charged on March 26 under Article 342.1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (organization or participation in actions grossly violating public order), and on June 24, he received a sentence of 3 years of restriction of freedom. This term expired in January 2025, but Bernstein is still restricted from leaving the country and is required to check in weekly. His arrest caused widespread resonance in the wiki community, and human rights activists recognized Bernstein as a political prisoner. Human rights activist and editor of several language versions of Wikipedia, Pavel Pernikov, was sentenced on April 7,2022, by the court of the Moscow district of Brest, presided over by Judge Yevgeny Bregan, to two years of imprisonment in a general regime colony at the request of prosecutor Yelena Tikhanovich. The basis for the verdict was several edits in articles on the Russian and Belarusian Wikipedias, as well as a publication on the website of the International Society for Human Rights. Belarusian human rights activists recognized Pernikov as a political prisoner.

Professional baseball is back in Tucson, Arizona, thanks to relocation of Mexican team

Datum: 2025-05-22

On Tuesday, the Mayos de Navojoa of the Mexican Pacific Winter League (MPL) announced a move to Tucson, Arizona, becoming the first professional baseball team to represent the city in over a decade. They will be playing in the Kino Sports Complex starting in the 2025-26 season, with Tucson to be the first American city to participate in the MPL. The Mayos are relocating across the border from their base in Sonora, Mexico. According to the MPL President, the team faced financial and logistical challenges that made it hard to remain in Mexico, including those that arose in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mayos signed a one-year contract, though according to the Arizona Daily Star, Tucson officials are hoping it will lead to a multi-year arrangement. According to Victor Cuevas, president of the Mayos, the team are set to rename themselves with the help of fan input. According to All Sports, reports had first emerged about a possible move a few months ago. Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montao announced plans to convert their former stadium into a school for young baseball players, similar to what happened with the Estadio Hctor Espino, according to El Sol de Hermosillo.

"Too Easy LoL": messages written on cell wall as ten inmates escape from Orleans Parish Prison in Louisiana, United States

Datum: 2025-05-21

On Friday, May 16,2025, ten inmates broke out of the Parish Justice Center Orleans in New Orleans in Louisiana, a state on the south-east coast of the United States. The Justice Center staff discovered the breakout during an 8: 30 a. m. headcount. Authorities quickly apprehended Kendell Myles, 20 years old who faced attempted second-degree murder charges in the French Quarter. As stated by the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, as of Saturday afternoon, seven inmates remained at large, with the other three apprehended by Friday night - including Robert Moody and Dkenan Dennis. LA State Police said a fourth fugitive was captured on Monday Gary C. Price, 21 years old. And on Tuesday, Corey Boyd, 19 years old, who had pled not guilty to a pending second-degree murder charge, has also been taken into custody. Sheriff Hutson reported that the inmates began forcing a cell door off its track shortly before 12: 30 a. m. They managed to break open a door, Hutson explained, noting that a staff member was present in the pod at the time. The group exited the jail around 1: 01 a. m. by breaking through a wall behind a toilet. Surveillance footage showed the escapees leaving through a dock door, scaling a wall, with some then running across to the interstate. Photos from the sheriffs office revealed a large hole behind the toilet in the cell, with graffiti above it reading We Innocent and Too Easy LoL. Three of the missing inmates Jermaine Donald, Derrick Groves, and Lenton Vanburen faced second-degree murder charges. Police were also searching for fugitives wanted for aggravated assault, armed robbery, false imprisonment, battery, and several drug offenses. Authorities warned that the escapees were armed and dangerous. Local, state, and federal agencies have launched a massive search operation. For safety, officials have relocated victims connected to the fugitives. At the time, the jail was understaffed, with only 36 staff and 4 supervisors present. Sheriff Susan Hutson emphasized the urgent need for 5.2 million in lock repairs and increased staffing. Officials were reviewing security procedures, staff actions, and the possibility of inside assistance. They said they would hold anyone who aided the escape accountable. Authorities urged residents to stay alert and immediately report any suspicious activity, and not to approach the escapees.
